Most commercial sewing patterns are drafted for a B or C cup. If your bust is smaller than the pattern’s built-in assumption, the bodice has more fabric than your body needs across the front. Instead of pulling tight like an FBA issue, you get the opposite problem: fabric pooling, neckline gaping, darts sitting too low, and a front bodice that never quite settles into place.

An SBA fixes that. It slashes the front pattern piece and overlaps it to remove the extra room the pattern assumed you needed. Simple concept. Slightly annoying execution.

## When Do You Actually Need One?

Here’s the under-discussed version of the cup-size problem: pattern companies may tell you the bust measurement for a size, but they don’t always tell you what cup size that bust was drafted for.

So your first job is figuring out whether the front bodice is too roomy because of the bust cup, not because the whole size is wrong.

You probably need an SBA if:

- The front bodice bunches, sags, or pools across the chest

- The neckline gapes open at the front

- The armscye gaps near the front armhole

- Bust darts point below your actual bust apex

- There is excess fabric above or around the bust, even when the shoulders fit

- Your high bust and full bust measurements are very close together

**The quick math**: measure your high bust above your bust and under your arms, then measure your full bust at the fullest point.

If the difference is **less than 2 inches** on a pattern drafted for a B cup, you may need an SBA. If the pattern is drafted for a C cup and your high-bust-to-full-bust difference is closer to 0–1 inch, you’ll likely need a larger SBA.

## How to Do a Small Bust Adjustment (Step by Step)

The SBA mirrors the FBA. Instead of spreading the pattern open to add room, you overlap the pattern to remove room. Here’s the general process on a darted bodice.

### Step 1: Find Your Bust Point

On your front bodice piece, mark the bust apex. This is the fullest point of the bust, and it’s where the pattern alteration needs to rotate from.

On many patterns, the bust apex is near where the dart points, but don’t assume it’s correct for your body. Compare it against your own measurements.

If your pattern has both a waist dart and a side bust dart, you can usually estimate the apex by extending a line through the center of each dart. Where those lines meet is the drafted bust point.

This matters. If the apex is wrong, the whole SBA will be wrong in a very specific and irritating way.

### Step 2: Draw Your Slash Lines

You need two lines:

- **Line 1**: from the bust point straight down to the waist, then up toward the shoulder or armscye

- **Line 2**: from the bust point horizontally to the side seam, usually through the center of the bust dart

These are the same lines you'd draw for an FBA, but the opposite direction.

FBA: open the pattern.

SBA: close it.

### Step 3: Slash and Overlap

Cut along your slash lines, keeping small paper hinges where needed so the pattern can pivot.

Now, instead of spreading the pieces apart, **overlap** them by the amount you need to remove.

For example, if the pattern assumes a 2-inch high-bust-to-full-bust difference and yours is closer to 1 inch, you may need to remove about 1 inch total from the bust. Since your front bodice piece usually represents half the body, that means overlapping by about 1/2 inch on the pattern piece.

Pivot from the shoulder or armscye area so the reduction happens where you need it: at the bust.

The result: a front bodice with less width, less bust length, and a smaller dart.

### Step 4: True Up Your Lines

This is the part that always looks worse before it looks better.

After overlapping, your pattern may look a little hacked together. The dart may be smaller. The waist may have shifted. The side seam might not match anymore. You’ll need to:

- Redraw the dart so it points toward your bust apex, but stops short of it

- Smooth the side seam so it blends cleanly

- Re-blend the armscye if your slash line affected it

- Check that the front bodice still matches the back bodice at the side seam

- Make sure the waistline and hemline are smooth

The goal is not to preserve the original pattern shape at all costs. The goal is to make the pattern fit your body.

### Step 5: Make a Muslin

You cannot skip this step. The muslin tells you whether your SBA actually works on your actual body, with gravity participating.

Check whether the neckline sits flat, the dart points toward the right place, the front armscye no longer gaps, and the fabric across the chest looks smooth instead of collapsed.

Sometimes the first SBA gets you close, but you may still need to adjust the dart angle, shoulder length, neckline, or ease.

### Step 1: Find Your Bust Point

On your front bodice piece, mark where your bust apex sits. This is usually the point of the bust dart, but double check against your body. If the pattern's bust point is off, the whole FBA will be off too. On the pattern it can be found by connecting a line from the middle of the waist dart with a line from the middle of the bust dart. Where the two intersect is the bust apex.

### Step 2: Draw Your Slash Lines

You need two lines:

- **Line 1:** One from the bust point straight down to the waist and up to the shoulder. In this example you can use the line connecting through the bust apex to make Line 1.
- **Line 2:** One from the bust point to the side seam. Again use the line you used to find the bust apex.

### Step 3: Slash and Spread

Cut along your lines and spread the pattern piece apart by the amount you need. That amount is the difference between your full bust and the pattern's intended bust measurement for your size.

If you need 2 inches total, you're spreading 1 inch on each side (since the pattern piece is half the body). Pivot from the shoulder point so the opening fans out at the bust level.

### Step 4: True Up Your Lines

This is the part nobody warns you about. After you spread the piece your waist is now wider than it was, and your dart has changed shape. You need to:

- Add the extra waist width into your dart (making it deeper)
- Redraw the points of your darts. It is recommended to make sure the point of the dart is at least 2cm from the bust apex for a smooth finish and easier sewing.
- Blend the armscye curve if you cut through it
- Check that the front bodice length matches the back

### Step 5: Make a Muslin

You cannot skip this step. The muslin is how you find out if your FBA actually worked or if you need to adjust further. Sometimes the first FBA gets you close but the dart angle is wrong, or you need a slight [small bust adjustment (SBA)](/blog/blog/small-bust-adjustment-guide) on the back to compensate.

## Why FBAs Are So Frustrating

If you've read this far and thought "this is a lot of steps for something that should be basic"... yeah. It is.

The real problem isn't that FBAs are hard to learn. Plenty of tutorials exist and the technique itself is logical once you practice it a few times. The frustration comes from the fact that **you have to do it on every single pattern**. Every. Single. One.

New dress pattern? FBA. Blouse pattern from a different company? FBA. The same pattern company but a different style? Potentially a different FBA because the ease and dart placement changed.

And if you're between sizes or have other fit issues on top of the bust (broad back, forward shoulders, sway back), you're stacking alterations on top of alterations. By the time you've done an FBA, a broad back adjustment, and a forward shoulder adjustment, your pattern piece looks like a ransom note made of paper scraps.

This is why so many sewists have a "fitting graveyard" of [half-finished muslins](/blog/blog/skip-the-muslin-with-custom-fit-patterns) in their closet. The technical skill required to alter patterns to fit your specific body is a real barrier, even for experienced sewists.

## The Part Nobody Talks About

The sewing pattern industry has been doing things the same way for decades. A company drafts a pattern for a set of standardized measurements, grades it across a size range, and sells it. If it doesn't fit you (and it won't fit most people without alterations), that's your problem to solve.

Think about that for a second. You pay for a product, and then you have to modify it yourself before you can use it. In what other industry is that considered acceptable?

We've all just... accepted this as normal. "Patterns require fitting" is treated like a law of nature rather than what it actually is: a limitation of the drafting method.

## What If You Could Skip the FBA Entirely?

Here's where things get interesting.

The reason FBAs exist is because traditional patterns start from a standardized body and ask you to alter toward your body. But what if the pattern started from your body in the first place?

That's the idea behind made-to-measure pattern drafting. Instead of picking a size from a chart and then altering, you enter your actual measurements and the pattern is drafted for your body from scratch. Your bust measurement, your waist, your hip, your shoulder width, your back length... all of it goes in, and what comes out is a pattern that already accounts for your proportions.

No FBA needed. No SBA. No stacking three alterations on top of each other and hoping it works.

Does that mean you'll never need to tweak anything? Honestly, probably not. Fit is personal and things like fabric drape, ease preference, and posture quirks can still require small adjustments. But the difference between tweaking a pattern that already fits your proportions and performing a full bust adjustment on a pattern that was drafted for someone else's body? Night and day.

## So Should You Still Learn to Do an FBA?

Yes. Genuinely, yes.

Understanding how patterns work and how to alter them makes you a better sewist. If you're working with vintage patterns, indie patterns from small designers, or patterns you've drafted yourself, knowing how to do an FBA is a useful skill.

But should you have to do one every time you want to sew a new top? No. Life is too short and your sewing time is too valuable for that.
